We lost a dear and amazing 5Rhythms dancer here in our Taos community last week. Elaine Sutton was one of our original dancers when I started the dance 10 years ago, urged by our mutual friend Eliezer Sobel.
As I have reminisced about our dancers, hikes, parties, and life cross-overs, I remember one of our conversations following a betrayal from my mate towards me many years ago. I was battling between negative, damaging thoughts and desires, and trying futilely to find the light within my own pain. She shared this story of her own rage from a betrayal of a long- ago mate, and her outrageous response. Let me just say - her story validated my own rage and what I wanted to do to the person that betrayed me. Her response to the betrayal was an unexpected response given my experience of her light, love, openness and inner peace. She gave me humor and new perspective. Of course, she also told me she was far younger and immature in those days, and that she had gained some wisdom along the way.
She also shared this story,
An old Cherokee is teaching his grandson about life. "A fight is going on inside me," he said to the boy.
"It is a terrible fight and it is between two wolves. One is evil - he is anger, envy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and ego." He continued, "The other is good - he is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion, and faith. The same fight is going on inside you - and inside every other person, too."
The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather, "Which wolf will win?"
The old Cherokee simply replied, "The one you feed."
This story is the basis of one of my most potent pieces of work. Howl. Of course, to me there is more. We need to feed both, both the dark and the white wolves have strengths that serve us as well. There are three opportunities to learn more about this territory as 2018 begins. Please join me in France, Antwerp or Taos, NM.
Beyond the Ideas:
Knowing the continuum of energy helps you to keep positive direction! Knowing both the light and the dark offers you more options and most importantly choice!
Immerse yourself in your energy without judgement of good or bad. Embrace all that shows up, and welcome the energies as a teaching.
Explore physical duality. Such as Closed versus Open. Light versus Heavy.
Put yourself in your other shoes. If you find yourself closed, first pause. Then see if you can hold the closed energy with love in your heart. Recognize this is a piece of you. Try on Open energy. Play between the Open and Closed energy. Then make a choice. Make the choice that best serves you in that moment.
Check out how wild animals express their energy (notice there is not a judgment of good or bad).
